Overview

The SmartElex Rotation Sensor is a module designed to detect rotational movement or angular position.

Depending on design, it typically uses:

  • A rotary potentiometer (most common), or

  • An incremental rotary encoder

In most SmartElex kits, it is a potentiometer-based analog rotation sensor used to measure angle/position, not speed.

Working Principle

1. Potentiometer-Based Rotation Sensing

Structure

  • Consists of:

    • Resistive track

    • Sliding contact (wiper)

    • Rotating shaft

Operation

  • As the shaft rotates:

    • The wiper moves along the resistive track

    • Output voltage changes proportionally

Voltas a voltage divider:

Vout=Vin'RpositionRtotalV_{out} = V_{in} \times \frac{R_{position}}{R_{total}}Vout=Vin'Rtotal'Rposition

Output voltage directly corresponds to angular position.

2. Encoder-Based (Less Common Variant)

If encoder-based:

  • Produces digital pulses

  • Measures:

    • Rotation steps

    • Direction (in advanced versions)

Output Characteristics

Analog Output (Potentiometer Type)

  • Continuous voltage range:

    • 0V to VCC

  • Represents:

    • Angular position

Digital Output (Encoder Type)

  • Pulse signals (square wave)

  • Used to count rotation steps

Electrical Characteristics

  • Low power consumption

i

Output type:

  • Analog (most common)

Measurement Characteristics

Rotation Range

  • Typically 0 to 270 (potentiometer type)

Resolution

  • Depends on:

    • ADC resolution of microcontroller

  • Smooth and continuous output

Key Components

  • Rotary potentiometer / encoder

  • Knob or shaft for manual rotation

  • PCB with connectors

  • Optional:

    • Resistors

    • Signal conditioning circuit

Interface

Typical 3-Pin Connection (Analog Type)

  • VCC Power supply

  • GND Ground

  • OUT Internal Features

    Linear Output

    • Voltage changes proportionally with rotation

    Simple Interface

    • Direct connection to ADC input

    Real-Time Response

    • Instant output change with movement

    Operating Behavior

    Position Detection

    • Provides absolute position (not incremental)

    Smooth Variation

    • Continuous signal without steps

    User-Controlled Input

    • Often used as a manual control knob

    Limitations

    Potentiometer Type

    • Mechanical wear over time

    • Limited rotation range (~270)

    • Not suitable for continuous rotation

    General Limitations

    • Cannot measure:

      • High-speed rotation (accurately)

      • Direction (in simple versions)

    Functional Role

    The module acts as a:

    • Angular position sensor

    • Manual input control device

    • Analog signal generator for control systems

    Summary

The SmartElex Rotation Sensor is a simple and effective position sensing module that:

    • Uses a rotary potentiometer (most common)

    • Provides analog voltage proportional to angle

    • Operates at 3.3V5V

    • Offers real-time continuous output

    • Is optimized for position sensing and user input control</
