SmartElex RedBot - Line Follower Sensor
Overview
The SmartElex RedBot Line Follower Sensor is an infrared (IR) reflectance-based detection module designed to:
Detect lines (typically black/white contrast) on a surface
Provide real-time position feedback for line-following robots
It is optimized for high-speed line tracking and accurate edge detection.
Working Principle
The sensor operates using infrared reflectance sensing:
1. IR Emission
An IR LED emits infrared light toward the surface
2. Reflection Behavior
White/light surface reflects more IR light
Black/dark surface absorbs IR light
3. Detection
A photodiode
Converts reflected light into an electrical signal
4. Signal Processing
Signal is processed using:
Comparator or analog circuitry
Determines whether the surface is light or dark
Output Characteristics
Digital Output
HIGH / LOW signal
Indicates:
Line detected (black)
Background detected (white)
Analog Output (in some variants)
Provides continuous reflectance level
Useful for:
Precise line position tracking
PID control systems
Electrical Characteristics
Operating voltage: 3.3V to 5V
Low current consumption
Fast response suitable for real-time systems
IR LED (transmitter)
Photodiode / phototransistor (receiver)
Comparator IC (e.g., LM393)
Indicator LED (status feedback)
Resistors and signal conditioning circuit
Detection Performance
Detection distance: typically 2 mm to 15 mm (surface dependent)
Response time: very fast (microseconds range)
Best performance distance: ~510 mm from surface
Internal Features
High Sensitivity
Detects small differences in surface reflectivity
Adjustable Threshold (if potentiometer present)
Allows tuning for:
Different surfaces
Lighting conditions
Basic filtering reduces minor fluctuations
Operating Behavior
Line Detection Logic
Over white surface:
High reflection output changes state
Over black line:
Low reflection opposite output
Output polarity may vary depending on module design.
Environmental Influence
Affected by:

Surface texture and color
Sensor height from surface
Limitations
Cannot detect:
Color differences beyond reflectivity
Performance degrades with:
Glossy or reflective surfaces
Uneven terrain
Requires proper alignment and calibration
