Overview

The 7Semi TMAG5273 4-Pin Breakout Module is a high-precision 3D Hall-effect magnetic sensor based on the TMAG5273 IC from Texas Instruments.

  • Measures magnetic field in X, Y, and Z axes

  • Provides digital output via I2C

  • Designed for position sensing, angle measurement, and magnetic field detection

Working Principle

  • Uses Hall-effect sensing to detect magnetic fields

  • Measures flux density in three axes (Bx, By, Bz)

  • Internal ADC converts signals digital data output

  • Built-in processing computes:

    • Magnetic magnitude

    • Angle (via internal CORDIC engine)

Measurement Characteristics

  • Axes: 3-axis (X, Y, Z)

  • Magnetic Range (Selectable):

Some variants support extended ranges:

  • 133 mT / 266 mT

Sensitivity:

  • 820 LSB/mT (40 mT mode)

  • 410 LSB/mT (80 mT mode)

Accuracy & Performance

  • Angular accuracy: ~0.5

  • Magnetic drift: ~5% typical

  • Sampling rate: up to ~20 kSPS (single-axis)

  • Supports averaging (up to 32x) for noise reduction

Electrical Characteristics

  • Operating voltage: ~1.7V to 3.6V

  • Typical supply (breakout): 3.3V

  • Power consumption:

    • Active: ~2.3 mA

    • Sleep: ~1 A

  • Operating temperature: 40C to +125C

Communication Interface

  • Protocol: I2C (digitastrong>Default I2C address: 0x35 (configurable)

Pin Configuration (4-Pin Version)

Typical 4-pin connector includes:

  • VCC Power supply

  • GND Ground

  • SCL I2C clock

  • SDA I2C data

(Some advanced boards may also expose INT/Enable pins separately)

Internal Features

  • Integrated CORDIC engine (angle calculation)

  • Built-in temperature sensor & compensation

  • CRC support for reliable communication

  • Configurable:

    • Data rate

    • Threshold interrupts

    • Gain and offset

Functional Capabilities

  • Magnetic field vector measurement

  • Angle and rotation detection

  • Magnetic proximity sensing

  • Threshold-based interrupt triggering

g>3D magnetic sensing (X, Y, Z)

High precision with digital output Built-in angle computation (no external math required) Ultra-low power modes High-speed I2C communication Noise reduction via averaging

Functional Behavior

  • Continuously measures magnetic field in 3 axes

  • Outputs:

    • Raw magnetic data

    • Calculated angle (if configured)

  • Can generate interrupts when:

    • Magnetic threshold exceeded

    • Temperature condition met

Limitations

  • Requires external magnet for operation

  • Accuracy depends on:

    • Magnet alignment

    • Distance from sensor

  • Sensitive to external magnetic interference

  • Needs calibration for precise angle measurements

Technical Summary

This module is a high-end magnetic s compared to basic Hall sensors because it:

  • Measures 3-axis magnetic fields (not just presence)

  • Provides digital, processed output

  • Includes built-in angle calculation hardware

  • Offers high speed + low power operation
