4-Channel IR Line Sensor Module

Line Tracking Obstacle Detection Multi-Sensor Array

What is a 4-CH IR Line Sensor?

The 4-channel IR line sensor module is a reflective infrared sensor array that contains:

  • 4 IR transmitter (LED) + receiver (phototransistor) pairs

  • Arranged in a row for multi-point detection

It detects:

  • Black/white lines

  • Edges

  • Obstacles

Commonly used in robotics for line-following and navigation

Working Principle

Each channel works like this:

  • IR LED emits infrared light

  • Light hits a surface

  • Reflected light is received

  • Output changes based on reflection

Behavior:

  • utput)

  • Black surface low reflection no detection (HIGH output)

All 4 sensors work independently for better accuracy

Internal Components

  • 4 IR emitter-receiver pairs

  • LM393 / LM339 comparator IC

  • 4 potentiometers (sensitivity control)

  • Indicator LEDs for each channel

Pin Configuration

Typical 6-pin interface:

  • VCC 3.3V 5V

  • GND Ground

  • OUT1 Sensor 1 output

  • OUT2 Sensor 2 output

  • OUT3 Sensor 3 output

  • OUT4 Sensor 4 output

Output Behavior

  • Digital output (object/line detected

  • HIGH no detection

Can be directly connected to microcontrollers (Arduino, ESP32, etc.)

Technical Specifications

  • Operating Voltage: 3.3V 5V DC

  • Detection Range: ~1 mm to 60 cm (adjustable)

  • Output Type: Digital (HIGH/LOW)

  • Number of Channels: 4

  • IR Wavelength: ~950 nm

  • Response Time: < 2 ms

  • Interface: 6-wire

Key Features

  • 4 independent sensing channels

  • Adjustable sensitivity (via potentiometers)

  • Real-time detection with LED indicators

  • Compact and easy to mount

  • Works in moderate ambient light

Industrial automation (object counting)

Advantages

  • Multi-point detection (better accuracy than single sensor)

  • Easy interfacing with microcontrollers

  • Adjustable sensitivity

  • Fast response

Limitations

  • Performance affected by surface color and lighting

  • Needs calibration for best accuracy

  • Short effective distance for line tracking

  • May give false readings in strong sunlight

Important Notes

  • Best performance at close distance (210 mm for line tracking)

  • Adjust potentiometers for each sensor

  • Keep sensor aligned parallel to surface

  • Use multiple set
